HAWAIIAN TROPICAL SEA CREATURES

HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA’A HAWAII’S STATE FISH

My family and I took a vacation to Maui and one place that is a must see is the MAUI OCEAN CENTER. It was an excellent opportunity to explore and learn about the fascinating marine life found in the tropical Hawaiian ocean.
Not one to go snorkeling, it was the chance to witness the beauty and diversity of underwater animals without venturing into the ocean. The Hawaii’s state fish is the humuhumunukunukuapua'a" pronounced “who moo who moo new coo new coo ah poo ah ah”. That’s a mouthful and I haven’ been able to wrap my tongue around that one. It means ‘Trigger Fish’. It’s not a fish that is eaten but holds cultural and ecological significance in Hawaii. It was such a positive experience to view the real life in the sea. I was able to photograph this special fish and it’s this bright and beautiful in person.
